Designers hit Claude's usage limits faster than anyone. Here's why - and exactly how to fix it.

The core problem
Every message you send to Claude reprocesses your ENTIRE conversation history. Message #30 costs as much as messages 1-30 combined. This is why "make the padding bigger" five times in a row destroys your limits.

Before fixing anything, you need to understand the mechanics.
Token cost = what each token costs against your limits, controlled by which model you're using. The same conversation on Opus costs 5x more than on Sonnet.
Token burn = how many tokens you're consuming through your habits. Uploading a full PDF when you could paste markdown. Letting Claude write 500 words when you needed one sentence. Keeping a conversation running for 30 messages when you should have started fresh at 10.
Cost is the multiplier. Burn is the volume. Reduce either one and you'll notice. Reduce both and you'll wonder how you ever hit a limit.
| Plan | Token Budget (5-hour window) | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Free | ~40 short messages/day | Enough to try it, not enough to work in it |
| Pro ($20/mo) | ~44,000 tokens | Good for learning, tight for heavy design work |
| Max5 ($100/mo) | ~88,000 tokens | Comfortable for daily design work |
| Max20 ($200/mo) | ~220,000 tokens | Heavy users, multiple projects, complex builds |

The hidden catch: All surfaces share the same bucket. Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cowork - same limits. A heavy Claude Code session in the morning means fewer messages in chat that afternoon.

Design work has specific patterns that multiply token consumption:
Pattern 1: The visual iteration loop
"Make it bigger" → "Actually smaller" → "Can you center it?" → "The color's off"
Each of these tiny requests reprocesses your entire conversation. By message 10, you're paying for messages 1-9 to be re-sent every single time.
Pattern 2: The MCP tool tax
